Pushing Boundaries in Visual Development   – Vance Kovacs

Tutor
Vance Kovacs

One Day Class
Sunday 11th June – 9am – 6pm

Description

“I want to see something new!” This is a common request,  not only from Hollywood and game studios but from our internal artistic voice. Creating the next best thing is a common goal, not only in entertainment, but in every human endeavour. We want to evolve our ideas, push boundaries, and develop the many disciplines that come with careers as artists and creators.

In this class students will take on the challenge to reimagine and redesign a famous character and/or place. They will recast them into a new form, time, reality or genre. The sky’s the limit. Students will research, discuss possibilities and execute our ideas with feedback and input. They will then pitch these ideas to the class. Creating a new, unique and fresh take on cultural icons can be a daunting task, but a crucial skill for the visual development artist.

Alien Creatures by Design – Wayne Barlowe

Tutor
Wayne Barlowe

One Day Class
Monday 5th June
9am – 6pm

Description
Wayne Barlowe will utilise his book, EXPEDITION as a tool to encourage students to approach creature design in a more holistic fashion. The masterclass will take into consideration the fundamentals of overall ideation, creature anatomy, animal behaviorism and environmental considerations on an alien world.

Part One will address the student’s goals in creating a new world, whether it be for film or for publishing addressing the practicalities of client needs versus creative imperatives. It will provide an underpinning for what the student will create during the class.

Part Two will engage the students in the hands-on creation of at least two creatures that will interact with one another. The goal will be to utilize principles of known animal behaviorism in a convincing way. Discussions of anatomy and functionality will be encouraged.  Alien form follows alien function.

Finally, Part Three will endeavor to pull everything together, meshing the newly created creatures into suitable environments. My goal is to heighten awareness that alien worlds have ecologies and the creatures that thrive in them have evolved characteristics, just as creatures on Earth have. The ultimate goal of the Masterclass is to create convincing aliens that fit organically into unique alien environments.

Story Art: Story boards simplified – Christian Gossett

Tutor
Christian Gossett

One Day Class
Sunday 11th June
9am – 6pm

Description

Bring to mind your very favorite movie. There’s an extremely good chance that the movie you love most was made using Story Art. In its earliest days, when your favorite movie was just a dream in the mind of its first creator, that dream took form in a series of pictures that made it possible to share the story with others. These pictures then became a visual plan that sold the dream to those who could make the project a reality.

This visual planning is known as Story Art.

You’ve probably heard of ‘storyboards’ but did you know the biggest movies in the world spend millions of dollars making them? If You can tell a story in a series of pictures, you have a major advantage in today’s entertainment industry.

Christian Gosett happily returns to Industry of Imagination to teach You the fundamentals on how to begin, and set you on your way to being able to tell any story you like, by boiling it down to a series of simple pictures.
After this workshop, you will have taken your first steps toward what is arguably the most sought after skill in modern entertainment.

Class Size
15 students maximum.

Students Must bring
A sketchbook and pens and or pencils – digital natives may use their laptops and tablets if they like.
